What to Expect from LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK eye surgery offers a means of correcting refractive vision errors, so you don’t have to use eyeglasses or contacts to improve your sight. If you’re considering undergoing laser eye surgery, take time to learn the facts about LASIK so you’ll know what to expect. Tucson residents can schedule a complimentary screening to determine if they are a candidate for LASIK surgery at Fishkind, Bakewell, Maltzman & Hunter Eye Care and Surgery Center. The following LASIK information can help you prepare for a successful surgery and smooth recovery.

Before LASIK Surgery

Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK procedures. Our ophthalmologists will evaluate your eye health and vision to determine if LASIK is a good fit for you. If so, we’ll schedule a date for surgery. You’ll need to arrange for a driver to take you back home after the procedure, as you won’t be able to drive. If you become nervous or anxious right before surgery, we can give you a mild sedative to help you relax.

During LASIK Surgery

LASIK treatments involve the use of a laser to reshape the cornea of your eye to correct your sight. Our ophthalmologists will perform the surgery with help from our ophthalmology team. Working with an experienced eye surgeon will ensure you get optimal results from your surgery. The procedure takes around 10 minutes for both eyes. You’ll feel no pain during the procedure, as we’ll numb your eyes with eye drops before beginning.

After LASIK Surgery

We recommend you take a nap after the procedure to help with recovery. We’ll give you medicated eye drops to relieve post-operative discomfort and promote quicker healing of your eyes. You can also use preservative-free artificial tears as needed to soothe your eyes. Certain activities, like swimming, hot tub use, and wearing eye makeup, can inhibit the safe healing of your eyes. Follow-up visits will be scheduled with our ophthalmology team to monitor your recovery and improvement of your sight. Our local ophthalmologists provide post-operative exams for a year to monitor your vision and ensure that you have received the best visual outcome possible.
