Common Questions About Ophthalmology

Ophthalmologists are specialized medical doctors who handle eye surgery and other medical problems affecting the eyes. While optometrists can handle many medical conditions, if you need eye surgery or need specialized treatments for a condition such as glaucoma, an ophthalmologist is who you should see. At Fishkind, Bakewell, Maltzman & Hunter Eye Care and Surgery Center, we have years of experience providing residents of Tucson, AZ, and the surrounding areas with reliable eye care including eye surgery. Following are the answers to the questions we receive regarding the role of an ophthalmologist.

Why Not Go Straight to an Ophthalmologist?

Patients are often referred to our ophthalmologists or eye surgeons by an optometrist. Many eye conditions are not noticeable until being examined by an optometrist. You should see an ophthalmologist for medical conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal issues.  Additionally, ophthalmologists are able to offer specialized services such as custom LASIK or other Refractive Surgery options.  An ophthalmologist’s primary function is that of an eye surgeon and will be contacted when a more intensive approach to eye care is required. At Fishkind, Bakewell, Maltzman, & Hunter Eye Care, we offer services from both optometrists and ophthalmologists in order to make the wide range of eye care services available to you.

Can They Cure Eye Conditions?

Some eye conditions can essentially be cured through surgical procedures, such as cataracts or detached retinas. Other conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration cannot be cured. However, our ophthalmologists can evaluate these conditions and create a care plan to slow or halt the progression of the problem.

Do They Take Insurance?

Like other doctors, ophthalmologists accept insurance. Speak with our office first to see if you should use your vision insurance or your medical insurance.
