PRK

Laser Eye Surgery: PRK

There are more options for laser eye surgery than just LASIK, despite it being the most popular procedure. At Fishkind, Bakewell, Maltzman & Hunter Eye Care and Surgery Center in Tucson, we provide alternatives to LASIK, such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for those who do not qualify for the LASIK procedure, but still desire clear vision without the use of glasses or contacts.

What Is PRK?

PRK is a form of corrective laser eye surgery that predates LASIK. While LASIK has become the standard for laser vision correction, there are a number of people who do not qualify for this procedure. The most common reason why a person may opt for PRK instead of LASIK has to do with the thickness of a person’s cornea. During a LASIK procedure, a flap is cut into the patient’s cornea and folded over to allow the eye surgeon to shape the material underneath, and then replaced and allowed to heal.  While the presence of the flap dramatically cuts down on the recovery time for laser eye surgery, there are some patients with corneas that are too thin for a flap to be created. In PRK, the outer most epithelial layer of the eye is simply removed and allowed to regenerate over a patient’s newly shaped cornea.

The Benefits of PRK

Just like all forms of refractive error vision correction, PRK can successfully treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Unlike the more traditional forms of correction, glasses and contacts, PRK and other forms of laser eye surgery alter the structure of your eyes so that there’s no need for you to maintain any equipment in order to see clearly.
