FAQ

Questions & Answers About Eye Glasses

It is important for everyone to have their questions answered before settling on a pair of corrective lenses. There are a few common questions that we get regarding eyeglasses. The team from Northwest Eye Specialists is here to make sure that everyone in the Tucson, AZ area has their questions answered.

Why do I need eyeglasses?

People need eyeglasses because the light that enters the visual field is not being focused properly on the retina. In some cases, the light is being focused in front of the retina. In other cases, it ends up behind the retina. This leads to problems with someone’s vision. Eyeglasses have corrective lenses that will fix this problem.

Do I need new eyeglasses every year?

Not necessarily. We do encourage all of our patients to have their vision evaluated every year. In some cases, the prescription may change and someone will need new lenses. In this case, we may be able to pop the new lenses into the existing frame.

Do I need to wear eyeglasses forever?

Many people who need corrective lenses end up having them for life; however, some people are candidates for laser eye surgery that may eliminate the need for eyeglasses. Our trained refractive surgeons offer the best LASIK or PRK procedures in Southern Arizona.

How do I take care of my eyeglasses?

It is important to keep the lenses clean so that nothing obstructs the visual field. When the glasses aren’t being worn, it is also important to store them in a protective case. This will prevent the glasses from being broken or lost.

Choosing the Perfect Frames for Your Eye Glasses

Frame technology has changed considerably over the last decade. The use of materials such as titanium, stainless steel, and other modern alloys has led to the development of products which are both extremely durable as well as very light and comfortable. We remain committed to staying at the cutting edge of this new technology, offering you the latest in both function and fashion. As newer frame products come to market, our optical staff continues to explore and preview them all, selecting the most advanced, fashion-forward products for our clients.

Choosing Eyeglasses for Your Face Shape

Oval: If you have an oval face shape, the recommended frames include aviator, browline, rectangle, and square. You want to avoid oversized frames and pick frames that are as wide as the widest part of the face in order to balance proportions.

Round: For a round face shape, try round, aviator, square, and rectangular options. You can also try a clear bridge in order to help widen your eyes.

Square: For square faces, you want to avoid small or rectangular frames and instead choose browline, round, aviator, and cat-eye glasses.

Diamond: A diamond face shape looks best with round, oval, browline, or cat-eye glasses.

Pear: With a pear-shaped face, aviator and browline frames look best and you want to avoid round, square, and oval.

Heart: With a heart-shaped face, choose a rectangle, aviator, geometric, oval, and round frames. Avoid oval, browline, and square frames.

Choosing Eyeglasses for Your Hair Color, Skin Tone, and Eye Color

Once you get the right frames that look best for your eyeglasses you will need to choose the right ones to complement the coloration of your eyes, face, and hair.

Skin tones are categorized as cool or warm. Frames that are camel, gold, copper, orange, off white, coral, warm blue, or blond tortoise look best for warm coloring. For cool coloring, choose frames that are black, silver, rose-brown, pink, jade, and darker tortoise. Eye color is usually a secondary element in determining your coloring. Hair color can also be considered cool or warm. Warm hair colors include golden blond, brownish-black, and brown gold. Cool hair colors are platinum, blue-black, auburn, and ash brown.

Chosing the Perfect Lenses For Your Eye Glasses

As with frames, lens technology continues to advance rapidly. The popularity of progressive lenses (the “no line bifocal”) has generated increased research and development of lenses that are both cosmetically appealing and extremely functional, providing outstanding vision from distance to near. This technology has been advancing rapidly, and many who have had past difficulties with this type of lens will now be quite impressed with the quality of their vision.

Recent advances have also brought about much thinner and lighter lens materials. Patients who once had to settle for thick, unattractive lenses can now reap the benefits of ultra-thin new materials. These lenses are optically and cosmetically superior, not to mention significantly more comfortable to wear due to reduced weight. The Fishkind and Bakewell optical shops maintain contact with all the major manufacturers of quality lenses to assure that we provide our clients with the very best of the new technology in a timely manner.

Our Optical Shops Offer Advanced Lens Technology for Your Eye Glasses

  • Plastic hard resin lenses (CR-39)
  • Available in more styles and sizes than any other material. Known for being reasonably priced, good optics, tints well. Polycarbonate
  • The most impact resistant material. Best choice for safety lenses, children’s lenses. Always comes with scratch guard and U.V. filter. Does not tint well. Prone to peripheral distortion, especially in larger frames. Also known to produce chromatic aberration (distortion of colors). Should not be used without anti-reflective coating (see below) Mid-index plastics (Phoenix, Trivex, Trilogy)
  • Newer generation of lenses which combine many of the features of plastic hard resins and polycarbonate. Designed to be thin and light, without the negatives of polycarbonate. Considered similar to Resolution but with greater availability of styles and sizes. Generally manufactured as a “non-aspheric” product which is beneficial in that it tends to be flatter, with less distortion problems. Hi-index plastics (1.6, 1.67, 1.74)
  • Specifically designed for the patient with very strong prescriptions. These lenses are quite flat, making the addition of an anti-reflective coating (see below) imperative. The most advanced of all lenses.
