Specializing in small-incision cataract surgery, refractive surgery, and treatment of corneal diseases, Dr. Bakewell is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Education & Experience


Brock K Bakewell, MD graduated summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Washington and Jefferson College. He earned his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College and served his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Virginia before completing a fellowship at the University of Utah in anterior segment eye disease. During his fellowship, he concentrated on the medical and surgical aspects of both corneal disease and glaucoma.

Dr. Bakewell joined Dr. Fishkind in practice in 1989. He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and has been the Chairman of the ASCRS Government Relations Committee since 2010. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Utah and a Clinical Instructor at the University of Arizona enabling him to teach and mentor residents. He was chosen by his peers as a Best Doctor® starting in 2007 and is also one of Tucson’s Top Doctors as published annually in the Tucson Lifestyles. Dr. Bakewell has lectured nationally and internationally and has also contributed multiple articles and several book chapters on various aspects of cataract surgery.

Specializations


Dr. Bakewell specializes in small-incision refractive cataract surgery utilizing monofocal, toric, multifocal, and accommodative lens implants. One of his areas of interest is challenging cataract surgery for ectopia lentis and trauma, and repairing subluxed and dislocated lens implants. He is active in clinical research regarding new lens implants and has been involved in 3 FDA studies that have resulted in the approval of both multifocal and toric lens implants.

Dr. Bakewell also specializes in refractive surgery. He has been performing LASIK and advanced surface ablation refractive surgery since 1997. He performed the first ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) for myopia in Southern Arizona in 2006.

In addition to cataract and refractive surgery, Dr. Bakewell has a keen interest in corneal transplantation surgery, being the first to perform DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) for Fuch’s Dystrophy in Southern Arizona in 2012. He also performs full-thickness corneal transplants as well as DSAEK (Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty), and DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty).

Outside of practicing ophthalmology, Dr. Bakewell is an avid golfer and carries a single-digit handicap. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Colleen, and their three boys, Kyle, Luke, and Brett.
